Butch & Brad played unplugged (and do we mean
unplugged - no p.a. just acoustic guitars and the occassional mandolin,
harmonica and vocal cords) at Hugo's near Longwood Gardens. In addition
to having great food this is a nice room for us where we can play quietly,
not take a ton of equipment and see all of your faces. Like being in
your living room...or on your porch. We got a chance to play a lot of
original music and oddly wound up doing a bunch of songs from Texas.
Songs that cemented our musical friendship some 15 years ago before
we formed the first incarnation of the Porch Chops. Here's what we played:
Set One: Butch's DON'T KNOW WHEN TO QUIT / IF YOU WERE A BLUEBIRD by
the other Butch, no not Butch Patrick from the Munsters, Butch Hancock,
the great Texas songwriter / SHE NEVER SPOKE SPANISH TO ME which we
learned off of an LP by Texan Joe Ely / Hancock's WISHIN' FOR YOU /
Neil Young's I BELIEVE IN YOU (one of the 1st tunes we ever played together)
/ Brad's IF I COULD ONLY from the Porch Chops' 1st cd / Van Morrison's
TUPELO HONEY for Jeff & Kelly / Butch's SEE YA LATER (which we WILL
record someday) / Joe Ely's I HAD MY HOPES UP HIGH / and Hancock's DALLAS
Set Two: Butch's BACK TO THE CLOUDS and TO THE TOP / the old bluegrass
tune I'M TROUBLED / a blues tune of Brad's from the early Chops days
THE QUESTION IS MOOT / Butch's INDIAN SONG / Brad's JUST A MEMORY (another
tune that's been collecting dust) / Butch's sing-along WHEN THE FOG
COMES ROLLIN' IN / JUMP START (a Brad tune from the "Prototype"
cd) / Hank Williams' YOU WIN AGAIN / Brad's MARTHA'S GLEN and Butch's
YOUR LOVE (both from "Prototype") / Michelle Shocked's FOGTOWN
> Clapton's GET READY / a tear jerker version of Butch's ROSLYN TOWN
for his friends in NY / the title song from PROTOTYPE / and an appropriate
song for the times, Rodney Crowell's TILL I CAN GAIN CONTROL AGAIN (oh,
somewhere in there Butchy played Tim O'Brien's great tune MOUNTAINEER)
Thanks to everyone who came out. It was great to see you all and
hope to see some more of you soon...

With
Stevie and the Sin City Band playing across town, we invited ex-Chop
Twinkter Mossberg back up onto the Porch. Though a father now and no
longer sporting pink spikes he still came through with some hideous
rock n roll faces and scorchin' riffs. He also brought along a friend
of his keyboardist John Southard. In spite of having never heard a note
of Porch Chops music John fit right in adding a propulsive energy to
a bunch of tunes we pulled out in honor of Mr. Mossberg's appearance.
If you missed it, don't worry, we won't let John get very far away.
He'll be back. We also had a treat when Red Baron joined us onstage
with his trumpet for a killer "Dark Star" medley and a beautiful
solo on our debut live performance of "Imagine". We have his
number too!
Here's what we played: SET ONE: We opened with an instrumental jam we'll
just call SOUTHARD MAN in honor of our guest that had a bit of a Miles
Davis JEAN-PIERRE tease tucked into the middle of it / the topical LET'S
WORK TOGETHER an old Wilbert Harrison tune that I learned off of a Canned
Heat record (also covered by Dylan and Roxy Music) / IF I COULD ONLY
from our 1st cd / Dylan's JUST LIKE TOM THUMB'S BLUES. The final line,
"I'm goin' back to New York City, I do believe I've had enough"
sort of snuck up on us and got a nice roar of applause / Christian sang
the Beatles' DON'T PASS ME BY / WHY WASTE TIME the lead tune from our
"Lifeboat" cd / Neil Young's brooding ALBUQUERQUE / Peter
Himmelman's MISSION OF MY SOUL which we haven't played in a couple of
years / The Who's THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT, a song of hope and fury / and
ended the set with the Grateful Dead's WEST L.A. FADEAWAY...SET TWO:
Christian sang a couple with Keith playing bass: Dylan's JOKERMAN /
and Bruce's ATLANTIC CITY / Next was a long psychedelic jam on the Beatles'
RAIN with a bit of Allman Bros.' MOUNTAIN JAM and tucked into the middle
/ We did Neil Young's HEART OF GOLD by request (almost remembered it
all!) / TANGLED UP IN BLUE / THEY LOVE EACH OTHER / SUBTERRANEAN HOMESICK
BLUES / and The Who's SQUEEZE BOX rocked out the last part of the set
with the dancers crowding the floor. SET THREE was practically one long
jam. We opened with Stone Temple Pilot's LADY PICTURE SHOW > Jimi's
FOXY LADY > about 20 minutes of back & forth funky jamming on
Sly Stone's THANK YOU FALLETIN' ME BE MICE ELF and the Talking Head's
ONCE IN A LIFETIME / Once the Red Baron climbed onto the Porch and Stevie
Hobson (fresh from his Sin City gig) jumped up to play some trade some
guitar riffs with Twinkter we lit into a long and weird and churning
DARK STAR which mutated into Sun Ra's SPACE IS THE PLACE before returing
for an inside out final STAR verse. We ended the night with IMAGINE.
Lots of fun and just what we all needed after such a touch couple of
weeks.
