Notes: Well, the countdown is now down to one. Brad will be playing one more Porch Chops gig before moving West. Band and fans started to get a bit emotional and wound up getting a real cool show as part of the bargain. It is a shame that there is no usable documentation. Oh well. Unique 3+ hour set with no breaks. We fooled around in the middle with a mini section where a set break would have been with various special groupings of people including solo segments from Brad and Steve and a mini set with Butch and friends that was very cool. Pat Kelly from Sac Mammoth, Double Dose, BZB, and Happy Fun Ball manned the skins during this part of the show and stuck around for BLUE SKY before El Tempo strolled back onstage. But I digress'the show was full of what can be loosely termed 'leaving songs', appropriately enough including the opening, Willie Nelson's FUNNY HOW TIME SLIPS AWAY. You could even argue that everything up to ZIGGY STARDUST fit that bill. Other than SCIENCE OF WALKING, SLOW TRAIN, TELEPHONE MAN, the big LOW SPARK medley, WOLFMAN'S, WHISKY IN A JAR, and BLUE SKY, all others can be interpreted to be 'end of the road' or 'movin' on down the line/starting fresh' tunes. Interesting. Lots a beautiful people dancing for the last half of this gig too which is always inspiring. L.A. their take on Neil Young's song about Brad's hometown took on particular resonance since that is where he's moving to.
A very cool night with lots of laughs and intense riffage.

Notes: The Porch Chops Annual Holiday Bash came to the Blue Crab Grill for the first time this year. A jolly time was had by all. The show was folkier, more countrified, with bluegrass and folk-rock type material given the sit-down, dining nature of the room. Faves in the first set last night were the tunes OH LONESOME ME from the late country songwriter Bob Gibson that we learned from Neil Young's After The Goldrush album (only our 2nd time to play this one); KEEP ME IN YOUR HEART from Warren Zevon's recent final cd; Brad's WITHOUT WORDS from our Lifeboat cd and Steve's set-closer TELEPHONE MAN. The bluegrass/classic rock medley and DON'T LET GO were a blast. This latter closed the night with some extended jamming and dynamic surges with Tom adding some wonderful 5-string licks throughout. Our annual butcher of holiday favorites continued in sweet form with LET IT SNOW! and RUN, RUN RUDOLPH. Well, it DID snow as we wound our way home and that reindeer ain't nothin' but roadkill. There were a couple of nice debuts including Steve's soundcheck call of Bob Wills' classic SAN ANTONIO ROSE, Butch's Chops debut of his WALTER & MARY and Brad's breakout of Dylan's I THREW IT ALL AWAY. The boys also broke out a few things they hadn't played all year like SEEYA LATER MAYBE and the Lovin' Spoonful's (What A Day For A) DAYDREAM.

SET THREE:
YOU'RE A BIG GIRL NOW (Dylan)
HENRY (NRPS)

> GET READY (Clapton)
Encore:
DON'T THINK TWICE, IT'S ALL RIGHT (Dylan)

Notes: A very interesting SET ONE started with the new tune of Brad's ROAD TRIP in only it's 3rd shot since it's April debut. They followed it with Steve's FOUR SQUARE in a rare appearance without it's RAINBOW MAN predecessor. Next was a stab at one of Brad's favorite early rock tunes that the Beatles turned him onto when he was ten, Arthur Alexander's ANNA (GO WITH HIM) followed by Chris singing our first version of the Fab Four classic I'LL CRY INSTEAD. Clapton's BELL BOTTOM BLUES had popped up in a set or two when the original band was together but not since. The new Brad tune AGENDA was next and has received a very enthusiastic response from the veteran Porch Heads in the crowd each time it is played. The boys' next announced their tribute to June Carter and Johnny Cash but in inimitable Choppian fashion irreverently tagged on a surprise debut of the Allman Bros.' WHIPPIN' POST...done up as a bluegrass tune. Is nothing sacred? Sorry, Johnny & June but some guy was yelling for FREEBIRD and that's as close as they were willing to get. SET TWO began with Brad and Butch together on a tune played a lot in the early days of the band, Dan Fogelberg's MORNING SKY. Chris jumped up half way through and then Steve climbed aboard for BZ's WALK IF YOU DARE. With El Tempo back onstage the Chops lit into BE FRIENDLY, penned by Stella Hobson, before turning the corner into the weird stuff with help from the Red Baron's trumpet. The new original SWAN DIVE is really blossoming into a tune that can be taken into any direction each time out and after a spacey intro it slipped into the Allman's DREAMS. Way Choppy fun. The wonderfully irreverent crowd responded accordingly as the band continued the cavalcade of recently deceased guys' tunes with a tribute to Robert Palmer (SNEAKIN' SALLY THRU THE ALLEY ? not played by the Chops in at least 5 years) by yelling out, ?Beethoven?John Ritter?Sun Ra?he's dead?? so we followed with a couple of Warren Zevon charts including the new tune KEEP ME IN YOUR HEART for the first time. WITHOUT WORDS we're starting to get the hang of and the classic Zito tune WHEN THE FOG got the crowd singing and dancing just in time for a rollicking and seldom played SQUEEZE BOX to rock into the break with. Set three was fun with Brad, by request, singing BIG GIRL NOW from somewhere deep inside, followed by a HENRY sans acoustic guitar as Brad changed a string. Steve then played a fiery his GET OUT with a roarin' solo that segued almost immediately into the old standby jammer, Clapton's GET READY with the Red Baron back on the trumpet. They squeezed one more in before they tossed us all out, a flyin' version of DON'T THINK TWICE also by request. Considering it was a nightmare gig for Brad when four guitar cords crapped out, his tuner gave up the ghost, a fuse burned out on an amp and he popped a string in the first verse of BIG GIRL NOW, it turned out okay. One of the most interesting set lists and some inspired playing from all and a GREAT crowd of revelers egging us on.
You know who you are.

TEXAS TOWN (Jim Brighton)
MOUNTAINEER (Tim O'Brien)
SPRINGFIELD MOUNTAIN COALMINER (Kate Wolf)
ROAD TO POWERS (Brad)
CHICKEN SQUAWK (Butch/Brighton)
RIPPLE (Garcia/Hunter)

Notes: A very loose and fun gig. Brad was sick as a dog and they passed on rehearsing and winged it in front of a wonderful crowd of listeners. This was more a comedy revue than a gig! A whole lot of fun. The show had two running themes ? the ?domestic turmoil? theme and the ?where you from? theme both equally spontaneous and unplanned but when you notice things like this rearing up you tend to strap yourself on and ride! Christian & Steve's first SPRINGFIELD MTN. COALMINER which was a staple of the original Chops shows back in the day. Butch's first TELEPHONE MAN (a Sin City Band staple) which they hadn't played in awhile. Mostly originals. The highlights were probably Jimmie Brighton's great song TEXAS TOWN and the sing-a-longs WHEN THE FOG and RIPPLE. They were oddly proficient at the difficult group chorale parts that comprise the CHICKEN SQUAWK refrain. Gotta love folk music fans. They even spontaneously surprised us by adding the classic clapping part the Irish drinking rave-up WHISKY IN THE JAR. Excellent. They've asked us to play the Delmarva Folk Festival in October which would be a gas. Thanks to John and Mike for making it easy and all the nice folks down Dover way who made us feel at home. Go check out one of their concerts sometime and tell 'em the Porch Chops sent ya.

Notes: Our 15th Anniversary show. We've been playing at the East End since 1989 or '90. We opened set one with the original Porch Chops Brad, Butch & Tom w/ Christian helping out on bass playing one of the tunes we did out our first gig ever, the traditional folk/bluegrass number DARK HOLLOW. We brought Stevie up and played the Flying Burrito Bros. staple SIN CITY dedicated to our favorite local heroes, Stevie's long-time band the Sin City Band. It is quite possible that we all were in the same room in 1978 when Brad saw them for the first time on his first visit back East from California and he thought, ?Well, maybe I could live back here.? We rarely play this great tune and did it a bit too fast but sure had fun playing it and Christian, who may have never played this hung in real fine like. El Tempo climbed behind the drums for the next three tunes, all signature songs from the early days of the band. ROAD TO POWERS and YOUR LOVE, both from our first album showed the bluegrass-y roots of this band as did our hillbilly version of Jimi Hendrix' classic LITTLE WING. This was the tune that taught the Chops that we should NEVER try to play a tune like the record. Gotta make it our own. Tommy & Butch hopped down for a bit and the current quartet pulled out RAINBOW MAN > FOUR SQUARE from our upcoming cd followed by a request for Willie Nelson. Well, he wasn't here so we did one of his tunes and this featured quite possibly the best solo from Mr. Hobson all evening. Just marvy. Three more originals, SHED THIS SKIN (coming out soon), SILLY OLD FOOL (from our 'LIFEBOAT' cd) and the great uplifting ditty, BE FRIENDLY penned by Stevie's mom Stella. Brad strapped on the electric for the last two tunes of the set, Neil Young's L.A., very appropriate since Brad just returned from vacation in his hometown, and Muddy Waters' WALKIN IN THE PARK which Stevie , again, wailed on. After a half hour of schmoozing with long-time and new fans the Chops hit the stage for an hour and 45 minute closing set of a much more rockin nature than the first basically countrified and laid back set. They opened with the Grateful Dead's first single from 1967, THE GOLDEN ROAD TO UNLIMITED DEVOTION followed by Stevie's GET OUT. Someday they'll break out Brad's tune of the same name as they did only once before down in Rehoboth years ago. Next was the chunky and edgy new rocker SITTIN TOO LONG IN ONE PLACE which they're starting to get a handle on. A fun one. Mr. Hobson tore up George Harrison's WHILE MY GUITAR GENTLY WEEPS to an enthusiastic crowd. This boy can play! Butch climbed back up with his mandolin and guest trumpet meister, the Red Baron joined us for Phish's WOLFMAN'S BROTHER. During the middle of a jam, Brad and Christian started teasing the Allman Brother's MOUNTAIN JAM for a few bars before finished the WOLF. Butch jumped off for the next one, BLUE SKY with the Red Baron grabbing a solo. Butch pushed Tom up who grabbed Chris' electric and we played an interesting SPACE in A minor before slipping into DON'T LET GO. Solos all around and then into a searching little jam that segued into the Butch Zito stand-by TALL GRASS split in half by a unison quote from Brad & Chris of Thelonious Monk's BEMSHA SWING. Very fun. The Red Baron stepped down for a sweet take on Dylan's TOM THUMB'S BLUES then back up for the group grope, THEY LOVE EACH OTHER. We asked a couple pals, Pat Kelly (BZB/Double Dose) and Jeff Evangelista to climb up on drums and bass for a couple of tunes while Tom, El Tempo and Butch took a break for beverages. Pat & Jeff just started a new band with Christian called "Happy Fun Boy". Catch 'em. Chris moved over to the electric and sang lead on WALKIN' BLUES and MARY JANE'S LAST DANCE. And with Butch and Red Baron back up, what could we close our anniversary show with other than TANGLED UP IN BLUE, the most oft played tune ion Porchdom. Thanks for supporting us all these years folks and thanks to Rich, Gary and all the past and present EEC crew. We love ya.

Notes: Interesting night started off with a rare DARK STAR opener. We were soundchecking and went into a bit of SPACE that turned into the STAR (only verse one). This wound into our planned opener RAINBOW MAN > FOUR SQUARE. Butch sat in on mandolin for a good portion of the evening. IF I COULD ONLY is always fun with Butchi playing his original mando part from our 1st cd. LIBERTY ON A BENDER was fun in it?s second performance. Butch?s ROSLYN TOWN (also from our ?Prototype? cd) suffered only from some guitar/capo tuning problems. Very nice solo from Stevie and his fills during the harp break were way tasty. Brad tossed in a lead and some fills too. Chris sang a rousing NRPS classic HENRY which was dedicated to John Ashcroft and Tommy Chong. We followed with another ?spate of originals??AGENDA, the newest, was played pretty well. WITHOUT WORDS which we have only recently started playing was off-kilter and ROAD TO POWERS was a pretty energetic bluegrassy romp. Brad moved over to bass for Christian?s rendition of Robert Johnson?s WALKIN? BLUES. Stevie on slide throughout. NEW MORNING saw its second appearance at a Chops gig and our 1st BIG RR > GDTRFB medley was a fun way to cap a set.

SET TWO: started with the great Neil Young song about Brad?s hometown, L.A. that he sang in honor of his old pickin? buddy TJ Hill who showed up unannounced from California and was spotted sitting in the back of the room smiling Cheshire-like. We continued with the rockers with our new tune SITTIN? TOO LONG IN ONE PLACE, the gnarly doppelganger to LIBERTY ON A BENDER. A bit shaky but ballsy. We?ll get it next time. A version of SHED THIS SKIN with Brad on electric was different. The new tune SWAN DIVE was next, written by Brad, Butch (who jumped back onstage) & Chris while Brad was laid up with the busted ankle in Feb. This eventually really took off into new places with the follow-up SPLASH JAM ? an unrehearsed vamp in D containing a little TAXMAN tease. We wound down into Tim O?Brien?s MOUNTAINEER which Butch turned us onto and sang here. Stevie?s GET OUT continued things at a rocking tempo as did a smokin? version of The Boxtops? THE LETTER. The Phish tune WOLFMAN?S BROTHER got those who had been hesitant out on the dancefloor and the kids from the front room in (who generally wait until the door man leaves to avoid the $3 cover). Next we pulled up TJ to take over on bass and Pat Kelly to play drums while Chris strapped on the electric and El Tempo took a break. With them we did Dylan?s SLOW TRAIN and the Dead?s NEW SPEEDWAY BOOGIE. The Red Baron climbed aboard on trumpet for the latter which went into a nice long jam that had the second missing verse of DARK STAR tucked into it, hence the title. Chris sang another one MARY JANE?S LAST DANCE with Dave replacing Pat and TJ staying on for the duration of the set. Of course, as fate would have it our Minidisc mysteriously quit the moment our guests got onstage so we?ll have to just remember how much fun we had. We followed this with the first tune TJ & Brad played together way back in 1982, Buddy Holly?s ROCK ME MY BABY. Closing off with our old standby Dylan?s TANGLED UP IN BLUE capped off a very fun night. A nice way to continue our summer celebration of 15 years as a band.

Notes: Our first acoustic Zimmy Fest in many years. The Blue Crab is a great place for Zimmy Fest because it is a listeningh crowd. A pretty varied bunch of tunes with 29 of the 33 tunes unplayed so far this year. MY BACK PAGES and NEW MORNING were debut performances for us and should be fun additions to the repertoire.. Brad even strapped on the bass for a couple of tunes, QUEREN JANE and JOKERMAN...don't get comforatable with that...he wasn't! BLACK DIAMOND BAY and HAZEL are two of the rarer tunes pulled out of the hat. Amyway, El Tempo got off the hook this year and didn't have to play thru a night of Zimmy stuff.

Notes: A fun night. Our gig poster this month featured an x-ray of Brad’s freshly busted ankle and this gig was his first night out of the house in a month. With major assistance from the boys he got set up, plopped onto a stool and had a blast, glad to be off the couch and mobile (or a reasonable facsimile). The set featured a bunch of originals including a couple that we broke out in Feb that this version of the band had never played live before, FOOLIN’ YOUR HEART and WITHOUT WORDS which were a lot of fun and should stick around for awhile. Right before heading to the gig Christian suggested a list of songs appropriate to the fractured state of things including ROLLIN’ & TUMBLIN’, Butch Zito’s WALK IF YOU DARE, IF I FELL, etc. Brad chimed in with DAY TRIPPER, I’M BUSTED and the list went on and on. What we finally came up with was Dylan’s EVERYTHING’S BROKEN to open the show. Neil Young’s DON’T BE DENIED was back after a long absence. Lots of Beatles including DON’T LET ME DOWN which they’d only done once before and another tasty guitar feature for Steve on WHILE MY GUITAR GENTLY WEEPS. WHY WASTE TIME and SNAKE CHARMER rocked, the latter featuring some hypnotic midi-flute guitar from Mr. Hobson. The boys broke out Badfinger’s NO MATTER WHAT late last year and have been having a blast with this great pop gem. This followed a special birthday song for our friend Damian with the Irish classic WHISKEY IN THE JAR to open set two. The ONION / WOLFMAN ender was a blast. Set three had the late-night crowd twirling and leapin' with a sparkly double encore

Notes: Our first time back at the Blue Crab in awhile. As usual the food was good and we had a decent crowd for such a horrid night. It was foggy and would storm all the next day so the previous week’s snow was a mess on the roads. We played it as a trio, not strictly acoustic since Steve played his Strat on a few tunes and Chris obviously had his electric bass but, in general, we used minimal guitar fx and just stage amps for the most part except for vocals in the room. We broke out a lot of tunes we hadn’t played together though some had been done years ago by other outfits. The originals, DRONE STRINGS, MEMORY FROZEN, WITHOUT WORDS, FOOLIN’ YOUR HEART and BAD MEDICINE were all pretty fresh. With a dozen originals it was heavy on our stuff which was nice and got a good response from the long-time fans in the crowd. The old drinking tune, WHISKEY IN THE JAR, known to many from Metallica’s version was a first for us though CS & Brad had played it with Butch Zito before. KEEP YOUR LAMPS was from the old, original Chops’ setlists as was MOHAMMAD’S RADIO. Ellen got up and added some sweet harmonies to CECELIA which Chris and Brad had only performed at the old MR Doc’s Happy Hour gigs a few years back. She also sang on CHANGE PARTNERS and RIPPLE which closed the show. A fun time and Dickie the owner wants us back for a Sunday afternoon gig. Thanks for comin’ out y’all.
